I felt pretty inadequate today

“It turns out that a husband who does the dishes is very sexy.”

“It turns out that a husband who does the dishes is very sexy.” These words were uttered by Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, in an interview on the television program 60 Minutes. Ms. Sandberg has written a book entitled “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. ” It is geared toward women learning how to fulfill their leadership potential. Now for a disclaimer – I haven’t yet read the book. But I was captivated by the single sentence, “It turns out that a husband who does the dishes is very sexy.” Hear, hear! This is one of the most provocative remarks I’ve heard. Never mind a laser focus on what happens to, for and by women at work. Women’s lives are made immeasurably better or worse by the level of partnership they have at home. Sandberg’s provocative response was given to Norah O’Donnell’s question about Sandberg’s assertions about picking a good partner. O’Donnell wondered if she was removing the romance out of the equation. Women’s very quality of life, their ability to be good moms, partners, workers, leaders, daughters, sisters  depend on great partnership – not support – at home. You see, support implies that the home is the women’s responsibility and, regardless of how hard she may work outside of the home, her partner is doing her a favor by participating in the running of it.

I certainly would not endorse a utilitarian approach to marriage.  Love is the cornerstone. Once you’ve got that you have to build the rest of the relationship.  No matter how fabulous things are in the beginning, in addition to a man who does the dishes being sexy, a man who does not do the dishes becomes decidedly unsexy!

It’s been a long time

I’ve realized that I need to be inspired to blog. My last posts were about issues I’d heard in the media and found provocative. Other than those, it seems to be the wonder of nature that causes me to put fingers to keypad and do a blog posting. And so it is now as I find myself in Las Vegas. Vegas is the jumping off point for a twelve day family vacation that will take us to the South rim of the Grand Canyon and Scottsdale, AZ.

It’s good to be back!
